Match the lamp base
Even the most stylish of lamp shades will not work unless it matches the base. For instance, if you have a large base, then you want a large shade. If you have a square base, you want a square shade (I think you get my point). You’ll find the most common color for lamp shades will be cream, or off white. This is because it still allows light to seep through, while softening it at the same time. For a calm light, pick a darker lamp shade, it helps set the mood and allows the eyes to relax.
Pick a color you like
A lamp shade should let your personality shine in the home decor, and if it doesn’t work, switch it out! One of my favorite lamp shades is the TP24 Drum Shade from Wayfair, especially the aqua version. It’s got a shape that works on almost any lamp base, and the colors really pop out at you. Plus, the soft cotton fabric lets in just enough light, so it can still light up the room.
Keep size in mind
For the lamp shade height, you want to keep it at two-thirds of the height of the base. This ensures that your lamp doesn’t look out of proportion. A bottom or top-heavy lamp is not a good look. Also, you don’t the lamp to stick out in places where it’s easy to bump into. This may seem obvious at first, but you’d be surprised as to how many lamps I see sticking out in hallways, waiting to be crashed into.
As you can see, it’s easy to pick out the right lamp shade. You’ll find your room transformed by the burst of style that a colorful lamp shade gives. And, if one color doesn’t work out, you can always get another one.
