Whimsical??? Nostalgic??? Moronic??? I’m becoming somewhat exasperated by the “two thousand dollar plus” price tag on what I call “moronic-looking bags”. It wasn’t bad enough when Moschino featured MacDonald’s Golden Arches on Chanel-inspired handbags…now we have Anya Hindmarch being inspired by a bit of childhood nostalgia with Tony the Tiger. We also can’t forget Hindmarch’s version of Jeff Koons-inspired Potato Chip Clutch, or Les Petits Joueurs Smiley Face Lego-inspired Clutch, Olympia Le-Tan’s Book-style Clutch and Givenchy’s scary Rottweiler Tote. In my opinion Tony the Tiger is far better on the original cardboard cereal box. As I’ve said before…I think designers love to push the envelope and see exactly what they can get away with. Why not just put your wallet and glasses in a Frosted Flakes Cereal Box??? Certainly much more cost-effective and you can munch on some sugary junk all day. Honestly…you couldn’t pay me to carry Anya Hindmarch’s bag featuring Tony the Tiger although I do love the hot shade of cobalt. Seeing how much black I wear the pop of color would be fun but not “fun enough” to purchase. Sad when you like the interior better than the exterior.
Many of Hindmarch’s bags are reminiscent of pop art…but this one is just plain ridiculous. The bag features: double leather top handles, embossed leather Tony the Tiger and metal feet at the base of the bag. If you don’t totally want to stand out in the crowd…the bag is available in black or navy. (definitely more conservative) Click the links to indulge if you’re ready to carry this limited edition around! BTW…Saks has sold out of the bright blue Tony the Tiger bag. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…not the tiger!
