Vetements exploded onto the fashion scene in fall 2014, and the design collective’s rise has been meteoric. The name — pronounced vet-MAHN — is simply French for “clothes,” and that one word has been the brand’s guiding principle since its inception. That same principle is part of what’s made the brand such a big deal lately; sometimes, people just want awesome clothes like the oversized trenchcoat, the uneven hem oversized striped shirt or the double sleeve hooded sweat dress, or the double sleeve hooded sweatshirt or the oversized bomber jacket (burgundy…hot color for fall) oversized green metallic sock booties and camouflage pants are just a few of the collection. Oogling over the oversized Parka.
A Simple Concept
Vetements was started by Demna Gvasalia, a 34-year-old Parisian designer. He is the head designer and the public face of the collective, but the identities of the rest of his team remain anonymous. Gvasalia previously worked for Louis Vuitton and Maison Margiela before coming to a simple conclusion about fashion: “I felt like there was a niche of people … who just wanted clothes.” The concept of Vetements — just clothes — was born.
Bizarre But Cool
The collections released by Gvasalia and his team so far have lived up to that simple vision. The clothes are bizarre but very cool; real, rather than high-concept; and somewhat gender-fluid. People want to wear Vetements, which proves that Gvasalia’s original concept was spot-on.
A Bright Future
Vetements is already making big waves in the world of French fashion, and there’s certainly more to come. Kanye West is just one of the line’s big-name fans. The company was a finalist for the LVMH Prize in 2015, showing not just commercial but professional success.
