For many of us, our hair is our crowning glory and it always looks perfect, but many more of us find that our hair does not always behave quite as we would like, and taming it and keeping it in good condition feels like an uphill battle we have no chance of ever winning.
If that sounds all too familiar, don’t worry because below, I have put together a list of some of the most common hair disasters we face, and what you can do about them to ensure that your hair always looks as good as you really want it to…
-
Flat Hair
We all want to have hair that looks thick and bouncy and which has some life and texture in it, no matter what kind of hair we have to work with so there really is nothing worse than those days when your once voluminous curls are lifeless and flat, lacking the bounce and shape you desire.
Solution: To revive flat hair and bring back the life and volume to your curls, utilize a lightweight volumizing mousse or serum that is specifically designed for your hair type. A good hair pick can also be used to gently lift the roots and give your hair a fuller look. Regular deep conditioning treatments can also help restore your hair’s natural body and bounce.
-
Heat Damage
Those of us who are proud of our hair and like to style it a lot, will inevitably end up using heat styling tools like curling irons and straighteners to give us those styles we desire. This might be good news for our look, but it is less good news for our hair, which can become damaged by the high temperatures it endures and become limp, lifeless, and broken.
Solution: Give your hair a break from heat styling as much as possible in your beauty routine. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you need to live with a bad hair day! You can opt for heat-free styles like twist-outs, bantu knots, or braids instead. You might also want to treat your hair with protein treatments and deep conditioning to restore its health and natural texture.
-
Unexpected Shrinkage
Shrinkage can make your hair appear much shorter than it is, a common concern for many naturalistas, but it is not something to get unduly upset about if it happens to you because, as you have probably guessed by now, there is always a solution to any hair disaster.
Solution: Embrace shrinkage as a sign of healthy, elastic hair. For times when you want to show off your length, opt for heat-free stretching techniques like African threading or banding, and you will still look great.
-
Dry, Brittle Hair
Hair that feels dry and brittle is not at all uncommon, but when it happens to you, it can make you feel self-conscious about showing off your locks. The good news is, it is not too difficult to get them back to their lovely luscious selves in no time at all.
Solution: Moisture is the key to healthy hair that is not dry, brittle, or prone to breaking, so what you need to do is put as much moisture back into your hair as possible. How can you do this? Implement a consistent moisturizing routine, using leave-in conditioners, hair oils, and deep conditioning treatments as a starting point. You can also seal moisture with a good oil or butter to keep your strands hydrated.
-
Breakage
Nobody has hair that never breaks, but if you are seeing an excessive amount of breakage, you could have a problem, and it could leave your hair looking less sleek and sophisticated than you would like, so you may want to do something about it.
Solution: if you want to turn the situation with your broken hair around, then you really need to trim the ends on a regular basis to get rid of split ends, which can lead to breakage further up the shaft. It is also a good idea to use a wide-tooth comb when you are doing this, and try to be as gentle as possible. Some people find a tangle teaser works even better for them as it is a gentle but effective tool. Protein treatments can also help strengthen your strands, so you may also want to consider using them if your hair is very prone to breakage, too.
-
Product Build-Up
If your hair feels weighed down, greasy, crunchy, or somewhat lifeless, then it could be that all of the products you have been using to make it look good have built up a residue and that is what is giving you a bad hair day.
Solution: Use a clarifying shampoo to thoroughly cleanse your scalp and hair. When you do this, you should make sure to follow up with a deep conditioner to restore moisture that has been lost in the process, or this could leave you with the whole other problem of dry and brittle hair. In the future, you should try your best to choose lightweight hair products and avoid using too many different products on your hair if you want to prevent excessive build-up from happening again.
-
Tangling and Matting
If your hair tangles or matts easily, then it can be really hard for you to manage it and present your hair in a way you are happy with, but it is a really common problem, so it is worth knowing what to do about it.
Solution: if you can, keep your hair moisturized and regularly detangle your hair gently using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. Protective styles like braids or twists can help minimize tangles and matting too, so are worth considering.
Obviously, no two people’s hair is exactly the same, but if you find yourself facing any one of the hair disasters above, it is always worth trying the solution provided because there is a good chance it will work, and if it does not completely solve the problem, your hair should, at least be in better shape at the end of it all.
Here’s to no more bad hair days with these solutions for hair disasters!
